SHUGO Co., Ltd. is a corporation that provides specialized restoration of Asian paintings and written works, mainly nationally designated cultural assets, using so-ko techniques.
The term "so-ko" has been authenticated in ancient 8th-century (Nara Era) documents and postscripts to Buddhist sutra scrolls. The craftsmen who used these techniques, called "so-ko-shi", are believed to have worked inside the offices where sutras were copied by hand. Their occupation seems to have mainly involved dyeing and patching together the Japanese paper used when copying documents such as sutras. We have added new meaning to the term so-ko by advocating for its use as a general term for the field of preservation and repair of cultural assets that are mainly composed of paper and silk materials and using this term in our work. In 1995, "so-ko repair techniques" were chosen as one of Japan's selected preservation techniques, and in recent years, so-ko has become recognized not just in Japan but also internationally.
SHUGO Co.,Ltd． stives to provide the best possible services throughout a wide range of activities including utilizing advanced craft techniques, based on the foundation of the traditional repair techniques and moral values cultivated by our predecessors.
